A Hierarchy of Change-Point Methods for Estimating the Time Instant of Leakages in Water Distribution Networks

چکیده
Leakages are a relevant issue in water distribution networks with severe effects on costs and water savings. While there are several solutions for detecting leakages by analyzing of the minimum night flow and the pressure inside manageable areas of the network (DMAs), the problem of estimating the time-instant when the leak occurred has been much less considered. However, an estimate of the leakage time-instant is useful for the diagnosis operations, as it may clarify the leak causes. We here address this problem by combining two change-point methods (CPMs) in a hierarchy: at first, a CPM analyses the minimum night flow providing an estimate of the day when the leakage started. Such an estimate is then refined by a second CPM, which analyzes the residuals between the pressure measurements and a network model in a neighborhood of the estimated leakage day. The proposed approach was tested on data from a DMA of a big European city, both on artificially injected and real leakages. Results show the feasibility of the proposed solution, also when leakages are very small.

Comparison of Two-point and Two-Time Methods for Estimating the Infiltration Parameters in Meandering Furrow Irrigation
Infiltration is the most important characteristic in the design and management of any surface irrigation system. Since the hydraulic of flow in meandering furrows is different from the standard furrows, the accuracy of infiltration function parameter estimation methods should be examined for the optimal design and management of meandering furrow irrigation. The main objective of this study was ...
متن کاملEstimating the Change Point of Binary Profiles with a Linear Trend Disturbance (Quality Engineering Conference Paper)
Identification of a real time of a change in a process, when an out-of-control signal is present is significant. This may reduce costs of defective products as well as the time of exploring and fixing the cause of defects. Another popular topic in the Statistical Process Control (SPC) is profile monitoring, where knowing the distribution of one or more quality characteristics may not be appropr...
متن کاملEstimating the Time of a Step Change in Gamma Regression Profiles Using MLE Approach
Sometimes the quality of a process or product is described by a functional relationship between a response variable and one or more explanatory variables referred to as profile. In most researches in this area the response variable is assumed to be normally distributed; however, occasionally in certain applications, the normality assumption is violated. In these cases the Generalized Linear Mod...
متن کاملA Novel Clustering Approach for Estimating the Time of Step Changes in Shewhart Control Charts
Although control charts are very common to monitoring process changes, they usually do not indicate the real time of the changes. Identifying the real time of the process changes is known as change-point estimation problem. There are a number of change point models in the literature however most of the existing approaches are dedicated to normal processes. In this paper we propose a novel app...

In some statistical process control applications, the combination of both variable and attribute quality characteristics which are correlated represents the quality of the product or the process. In such processes, identification the time of manifesting the out-of-control states can help the quality engineers to eliminate the assignable causes through proper corrective actions. In this paper, f...
